Why do people oppose the mosque near Ground Zero?

They were Muslim terrorists? So what? There are Christian terrorists as well. Opposing the mosque is basically saying “All Muslims are terrorists.”

They were also avid tennis players. Are you going to protest the new tennis court near Ground Zero?
I know it isn’t the best thing to do, but they have the right to buy the property and build it there. So suck it up.
The mosque is not ON Ground Zero, it is NEAR Ground Zero.

I don’t deny that there are Christian terrorists. But how could I deny that it would–at the very least– be completely tasteless for the Christians to erect a large cathedral at, say, the site of an LRA massacre (particularly, an LRA massacre of non-Christians in a largely non-Christian area). It would be even more tasteless if that cathedral were far larger than any Christian congregration in the area to fill (leaving open ample questions as to why the cathedral were being built), and the cash that came for the construction of the cathedral was from an undisclosed source, possibly one that supports groups like the LRA. Do you deny that this would be tasteless, to say the least?

Of course, tastelessness alone isn’t the issue. Islam is an expansionalist religion, as is Christianity. Unlike Christianity (which, prior to taking over Rome, was a persecuted religion of the poor), Islam has been, from its inception bound to politics and conquest. Christianity has expanded ‘primatively’—through blunt conquests, life-or-death conversions, and attempts to wipe out pre-existing religions in an area , although this is largely in the past. And, not to deny that many Muslims believe that the world should come under Dar-al-Islam through peaceful giving of dowah, but Islam still is undergoing primative expansion in many areas. Muslim raids on Christian villiages in Ethiopia, the treatment of religious minorities in Muslim countries, the refusal of Islam to let pre-existing religions have their holy sites back exc, attest to this. Primative expansion being forcing people to believe at the point of a sword, or forcing ones religion down from the top of the hierarchy so that it predominates. And it is no secret that when Islam expands, it sticks mosques and monuments on important sites of a conquered territory to mark its presence and make the area Muslim. Jewish, Christian, Hindu, and pagan holy sites–now buried under mosques–can attest to this. The Ground 0 Mosque does bear uncanny parallels to that.
