Have I got permanent muscle damage?

A few months ago, I fell twice whilst rollerblading. I grabbed a fence to try and stay up, but my legs went from underneath me, resulting in whiplash. With hindsight, I know I should’ve just let myself fall. Anyway, both times I let the area heal, which took a couple of weeks. Since then I’ve been fine, even when playing tennis, but a couple of weeks ago I jogged and straight away my shoulder where I was injured hurt, and again today I jogged and the same thing happened. Is it too late to go to my GP for treatment. What would that entail? Massage etc? Could more harm be done if massage is done incorrectly by a non-professional? What are my chance of complete recovery?

Derek: You don’t only get whiplash in car crashes you ignorant fool. I was in absolute agony for ages, so much so that I couldn’t leave the house. You try holding onto something and letting your legs roll quickly from under you and see what happens.

You may be correct in thinking it is whiplash. If that is so then it is the neck that is giving you the problem and not the shoulder. The nerves that control the shoulder and arm come from the neck. So I would definitely suggest that you see your doctor and have them check out the neck and shoulder to see what injuries might have happened. If the only time that the shoulder hurts is when you are jogging then my thinking is that it is going to be the neck. If on the other hand the shoulder hurts when you are using it apart from jogging then it would seem to be the shoulder itself. Unfortunately there are cases where the shoulder and neck could both be involved. Hope this helps!

Circuit Training for Tennis

Get fit to play, don?t play to get fit is a very well known saying and you should all know that doing some fitness work along side your lessons and practise sessions will improve your performance as well as making you less prone to injury.

Well, if you are looking for the perfect way to train all the components of fitness you need to improve your game in the same session, then you need look no further than circuit training.

Circuit training is an exercise format that normally utilises between 6 and 10 exercises that are completed one after another (the circuit!!) for a specified number of repetitions or time period before moving onto the next exercise. The completion of one exercise and the beginning of the next are separated by brief timed rest intervals and each circuit by a longer rest period. The total number of circuits performed during a training session may vary from two to six depending on your training level (beginner, intermediate, or advanced), your period of training and your training objective.

To plan a Session you will need to think about the possible exercises that can be performed with the equipment and space you have available. In order to ensure that no two consecutive exercises stress the same muscle group set up the circuit as follows:

Total-body, Upper-body, Lower-body, Core/Trunk etc.

It is important to warm up and perform some dynamic stretching exercises and to repeat this as a cool down after the session.

Example No Equipment Circuit Training Session

Skipping ? cardiovascular & coordination

Press ups – chest, shoulders, arms (esp triceps – serve) and core

Squats ? quads, glutes, hamstrings, calves and core/lower back

Crunch ? abdominals esp rectus abdominis

Star Jumps ? leg power, flexibility & endurance

Bench Dips ? triceps, chest and shoulders

Lunges ? hamstrings, glutes and quads

Back extension ? lower back

Shuttle runs (sprinting/running continuously between predetermined points) ? speed endurance

Duration ? start with the following (lower level): 20 seconds work on each exercise with a 30 second recovery between each exercise – 3 sets with a 3 minute recovery between each circuit

Complete the circuit training session twice a week with at least 48 hours between each session. I suggest you base your training on a four week cycle of an easy week, medium week, hard week and test/recovery week.

The work load can be varied by changing the number of exercises, duration, sets or repetitions.

What’s a severe injury a tennis racket can cause?

the antagonist in my story is a crazy tennis player that would do anything to win. the protagonist just beat her in a match, and the crazy one hits her leg with a tennis racket. Hard. it ends up severely injuring her, causing her to withdraw from the tournament.

the problem is, im not a medical expert, and i don’t know what kind of injuries are out there… i was thinking a fractured patella (kneecap), but the recovery time cant be that long and she needs to be able to play tennis again soon….

Fractured patella means you can’t extend (straighten) your leg without excruciating pain. The patella is a bone with tendons on both ends, meaning the big muscles of the thigh (the quadriceps) are always trying to pull it apart. A complete patellar fracture will have to be wired together, which means surgery and your victim is out of the tournament.

There is also the common peroneal nerve strike, there is a spot on the outer thigh where the peroneal nerve is close to the skin and this a pressure point that police are taught to hit with a baton. Stun that nerve with a sharp blow and your leg below the knee hurts like a bear and doesn’t necessarily work as desired for a couple of minutes. As an opening blow, a brutal backhand to the peroneal nerve would drop your victim to the ground almost instantly. She would probably reach for her leg out of pain, and the next blow would break a finger or two.
