Will the ATP and WTA tour suffer from the economic melt down?
i read LPGA 2009 calendar has cut down 2 events and the total prize money shrink from 60 million to 55 million in 2009.
will tennis suffer the same? did the calendar made? is the prize money increase or decrease? any tournament eliminated due to the poor sponsorship?

Looks like tennis is well and strong.. good for all tennis fans!
No Eric neither WTA nor ATp will suffer, in fact WTA is offering record prize money of $77 million for for 2009, which is in fact a $ 10 million jump from the $ 67 million prize money they offered in 2008.
They are also giving equal prize money for most of the joint events like Indian Wells, Miami, Madrid, Dubai etc.
The events have been reduced though 20 Premier events featuring top players this time, 6 less than the 26 Tier 1 and 2 events they had in 2008.
But the new schedule gives more in season breaks to top players, by reducing the number of mandatory events, , from 13 to 10 tournaments for the top players, 23% reduction.
To top it off there is a 30% increase in off season they will have a 9 week off season this time around, instead of the usual 7 week off season. So players will definitely benefit.
WTA is also investing $710 million in new stadium facilities, i don’t see a sign of a financial crisis in all this, so its obvious WTA is not gonna suffer from the economic melt down.

ATP is also offering more prize money in 2009, the link below says its record breaking prize money for 2009-10, which is correct.
ATP is giving a 36 percent increase in prize money for next year and a $8 million bonus pool. Plus, almost a billion dollars of investment in tournaments, new stadiums and improved facilities. No sign of a financial crisis on ATP as well, its in a very healthy state.

Anticipating Brasil Open – Costa Do Sauipe 2009
This year the ATP World Tour carries the promise to be as exciting, if not more, as ever. The season will showcase many well known faces of men’s tennis who will be the leading highlights whereas some young and fairly new entrants to the game will also show their skills in the court trying to make it into the elites of the game.
Some changes have been introduced to the Tour such as new tiers, calendar, requirements to be met by players, a bonus pool and tour swings. The tour will be given extra promotion through the media. Net branding, will be introduced on the court so the fans will be able to recognize the level of the event being played.
Depending on the points awarded to the winner in the different tournaments, each one has been given a new title such as ATP World Tour Masters 1000, ATP World Tour 500 and ATP World Tour 250. These will then lead into the end of the season tournament, the Barclay’s ATP World Tour Finals which will be held in London, England. It is here that the final winner will be crowned as the ATP World tour Champion .
Tennis results archive from last year shows that the singles title in the Brasil Open, Costa Do Suipe, was won by Nicolas Almagro. The second seed tennis star beat his fellow Spaniard and the No. 1 seed Carlos Moya in a thrilling match on Feb 17, 2008. He beat Moya 7-6(4), 3-6, 7-5. This was his 3rd win in the ATP title series. He won the first two titles in Valencia in 2006 and 2007. Although Almagro had reached the quarter-finals in 2006 and 2007 yet this was the first time he actually won the tournament. Tennis results at the ATP can be quite surprising at times!
In the doubles event, Marcelo Melo and Andre Sa of Brazil defeated Albert Montanes and Santiago Ventura of Spain 46 62 10-7.
According to the 2009 ATP World Tour rankings, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic stand at the first, second and third places respectively. So far, only 3 ATP events have taken place. The Brisbane International ATP World Tour 250 was won by Radek Stepanek and the doubles was won by Marc Gicquel and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. The Qatar ExxonMobil Open ATP World Tour 250 was won by Andy Murray and the doubles was won by Marc Lopez and Rafael Nadal. Chennai Open ATP World Tour 250 saw Marin Cilic lifting the trophy in the singles whereas Eric Butorac and Rajeev Ram emerged as winners in the doubles.
Seeing how exciting and unpredictable the ATP tennis results have been in the past 3 events, I am looking forward to the Brasil Open. The expectations of fans all over the world are very high and judging by past experience I am sure the event won’t disappoint anyone.
